A 17-year-old girl has been charged with arson over a number of blazes that were allegedly deliberately lit in Bonogin.

Several small fires erupted in grassland near Waltham Court, Bonogin Road and Brighton Lane on Tuesday afternoon during a total fire ban.

Firefighters quickly doused the blazes and brought them under control with nobody injured.

Police immediately indicated they were suspicious, with an investigation launched to find the firebug.

Today, officers located and arrested the 17-year-old Bonogin girl.

She has been issued a notice to appear on four counts of arson and is expected to appear at Southport Childrens Court on November 8.

Gold Coast District Disaster Co-Ordinator, Acting Chief Superintendent Geoff Sheldon, says police take arson very seriously.

“Let this serve as a warning as Queensland begins battling what is sure to be a devastating bushfire season,” Acting Chief Superintendent Sheldon says.

“We will investigate all fires as to their origin and bring those responsible to justice if fires are found to be deliberately lit.”
