A survey has found a majority of people on the Gold Coast support the completion of Light Rail Stage 4 to the airport with most also backing trams heading down the Gold Coast Highway.

The findings from the council poll come amid two state government reviews into the extension, as doubts grow about whether the link will ever eventuate.

Council surveyed 1001 people across the city including 400 in key southern suburbs that would be impacted by stage four.

The results found 76 percent of respondents strongly support completing light rail to the airport while 15 per cent oppose it.

Of all responses, 74 per cent back the route down the Gold Coast Highway.

Among those living along the proposed stage four route, 53 per cent are against the highway option while 42 per cent back it.

Those against the coastal route cited increased traffic and congestion and reduced parking as their main reasons for being against it.

Despite most people in southern suburbs being against the coastal route, 62 per cent of those surveyed said they would use it if completed, compared to 77 per cent of respondents city wide.

The findings of the survey will be presented to Council’s Transport Committee on Tuesday.
