After an absolute drenching over the past few weeks, Gold Coasters can finally put the brolly and gumboots away – but might have to pull out the winter coats in exchange.
The sun will be out for the weekend, with just the very slight chance of a shower on Saturday but nothing but sunshine from Sunday onwards.
However, we are being warned to expect a cold-weather system that will sweep across the southeast over the weekend.
Temps this weekend will be a fairly comfortable 23 degrees but overnight temps will get as low as 11 degrees by Wednesday next week.
By Tuesday and Wednesday, day temps will be a cool 19 degrees – with winter well and truly on the way for the City.
The long-awaited sunshine comes after it was found the Gold Coast has already exceeded its annual average rainfall and it’s still only May.
Unfortunately, the sunshine is not likely to stick around as we head into winter – with a 75% chance the Gold Coast will have more than its average rainfall between July and September.
The Bureau of Meteorology has released its outlook for winter and it’s looking a little bleak.
“The Outlook predicts the unusually wet conditions for inland parts of Queensland are likely to be in the top 20% of wettest winters,” BOM says.
“With already saturated catchments in south-eastern Australia, the winter rain extends the flood risk for these regions.”
According to the Bureau, the Gold Coast has also more than doubled the May average already.
