The Gold Coast is expected to get a reprieve from storm action today but now the city is dealing with a low-intensity heatwave that will stick around for the next few days.
The mercury will hit 33 degrees along the coast while inland suburbs including Coomera are expecting top temperatures of 35.
That is set to make life even tougher for the tens of thousands of residents who are still without power and air-conditioning.
Identical conditions are expected on Friday.
The Bureau says there is still the chance of storm activity across the Gold Coast over the next couple of days but it’s far less likely.
However, the reprieve from storms will be short-lived.
“So, a couple of quiet days for Thursday and Friday, around the weekend though, we do see another upper-level system coming through, another trough moving in across the southern parts of Queensland and into the southeast,” Daniel Hayes from the Bureau said.
“So, we do see that chance of shower activity increase from Saturday through to New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day as well and we also see the likelihood of thunderstorm activity increase again and the possibility that some of that activity could again be severe thunderstorms.
Pimpama Community Centre along with most council libraries, with the exception of Runaway Bay will be open again today for those needing relief from the heat and some power to charge up devices.
Entry at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre will also be free for the next two days.
Wet ‘n Wild is reopening today but White Water World will remain closed, along with Top Golf and Paradise Country while Australian Outback Spectacular reopened on Wednesday night.
Village Roadshow Theme Parks Chief Operating Officer Bikash Randhawa says Top Golf will take a little longer to get back up and running.
“The netting has been destroyed and we’re working on that. So, we’ve got specialists coming in today and tomorrow and we’ve got a plan together and hopefully we can get all the right equipment in and get that working as well,” Mr Randhawa told Hot Tomato.
Mr Randhawa says Paradise Country has also suffered extensive damage but assures everyone the animals are safe and are being cared for.
