A severe weather warning remains in place for the Gold Coast and New South Wales northern rivers as a low-pressure system continues to develop off the Queensland coast.

That system is expected to remain just off the coast and track further south over the coming hours.

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting widespread rain to start hitting the Gold Coast and Tweed later on Saturday night with the heaviest falls to come on Sunday morning.

Severe thunderstorms are likely within that low-pressure system

The BOM has warned that rainfall totals of 200mm are possible over a six-hour period.

But some areas could be hit with as much as 300mm over 24 hours, particularly along the coast and ranges.

That could lead to dangerous and life-threatening flooding according to the BOM.

A flood watch remains in place for Gold Coast rivers and creeks as well as the Tweed, Richmond, Wilsons, and Rouse Rivers in New South Wales.

A flood warning is in place for parts of the Logan and Albert Rivers.
