The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the Gold Coast.

The storm is bringing potentially giant hailstones and damaging winds, however the main area of concern for the city is heavy rainfall.

“Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding over the next several hours in parts of the Southeast Coast district,” the BOM says at 4.36pm.

“Locations which may be affected include Coolangatta.”

Large parts of the city have already experienced some huge rainfall totals this afternoon.

Close to 100mm of rain has fallen at Mudgeeraba and Burleigh Waters in the space of a few hours.

While over 70mm has been recorded at Tallebudgeera Creek, Molendinar, Carrara and Evandale Lake.
