The Bureau has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for heavy rainfall on the Gold Coast and Scenic Rim.
The storm is producing heavy falls that could lead to flash flooding.
“The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 3:15 pm, severe thunderstorms and persistent heavy showers likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding were detected near Coomera,” BOM says
“These thunderstorms are moving towards the south. They are forecast to affect Little Nerang Dam and Nerang by 3:45 pm and Springbrook and Mudgeeraba by 4:15 pm.”
59mm has been recorded at Little Nerang Dam in 1 hour to 3pm, and 94 mm was recorded at Clagiraba Road Alert in 3 hours to 3:15pm
Emergency services advise people to:
- Park your car undercover away from trees.
- Close doors and windows.
- Keep asthma medications close by. Storms and wind can trigger asthma attacks.
- Charge mobile phones and power banks in case the power goes out.
- Put your pets somewhere safe and make sure they can be identified in case they get lost.
- Do not drive now unless you have to because conditions are dangerous.
- Tell friends, family and neighbours in the area.
- Go inside a strong building now. Stay inside until the storm has passed.
The next warning is due to be issued by 4:20 pm.
