A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for people in parts of the Gold Coast and Scenic Rim.

Large hailstones and damaging winds are “likely” in these areas, with a warning for people to prepare.

The weather event is forecast to affect affect the McPherson Range by 4:25 pm and Numinbah Valley, Little Nerang Dam and Tallebudgera by 4:40 pm.

Damaging, locally destructive winds, large, possibly giant hailstones and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding are likely.

The Bureau of Meteorology detected the very dangerous thunderstorms on the weather radar near Lamington National Park and the area south of Canungra at 4.10pm and are moving towards the east.

Other severe thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar near Maroon Dam. They are forecast to affect Rathdowney, Laravale and Kooralbyn by 4:40 pm.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should:

  • Move your car under cover or away from trees.
  • Secure loose outdoor items.
  • Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
  • Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.
  •  Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
