A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for the Gold Coast, with slow-moving storms making their way across the city.
According to the Bureau of Meteorology, severe thunderstorms were detected near Coolangatta and Southport around 6.20am.
“These thunderstorms are slow moving, they are forecast to affect Springbrook and Hope Island by 7:20 am,” BOM said.
The storms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding over the Gold Coast for the next several hours.
The bureau has confirmed that more than 108mm of rain was recorded at Currumbin Creek in the 2 hours to 6.31am.
The wild weather has also caused some impacts to operations at Gold Coast Airport.
Flights were grounded for a short time, however, they are now operating with some minor delays as a result.
Emergency services advise people to:
* Park your car undercover away from trees.
* Close doors and windows.
* Keep asthma medications close by. Storms and wind can trigger asthma attacks.
* Charge mobile phones and power banks in case the power goes out.
* Put your pets somewhere safe and make sure they can be identified in case they get lost.
* Do not drive now unless you have to because conditions are dangerous.
* Tell friends, family and neighbours in the area.
* Go inside a strong building now. Stay inside until the storm has passed.
