A severe storm warning has been issued for parts of the Gold Coast Hinterland as a large band of storms moves in from the west.

Warm and humid conditions have seen severe storms develop across parts of the Southern Downs and Scenic Rim throughout the afternoon.

Rathdowney recorded 58mm of rain in just one hour.

The Bureau has warned that severe storms have been detected on the radar south of Canungra and were moving to the east.

They are forecast to impact areas including Springbrook, Numinbah Valley and Little Nerang Dam by 5.45pm.

Damaging winds and heavy rain that could lead to flash flooding are likely.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should:
* Move your car under cover or away from trees.
* Secure loose outdoor items.
* Never drive, walk or ride through flood waters. If it’s flooded, forget it.
* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
* Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.
* Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
