A search is resuming this morning for a prominent Queensland Police officer feared missing in waters off the coast of northern New South Wales.

The search was launched for Inspector Jay Notaro after his surfboard was found at Broken Head near Byron Bay on Tuesday.

His vehicle was later found in a nearby carpark.

New South Wales Police began a major search around 12.40pm with assistance from Police Rescue, Water Police, Queensland PolAir and Surf Lifesaving New South Wales.

They will continue today, focussing on the areas between Lennox Head and Cape Byron, particularly the Broken Head area.

Inspector Notaro had previously been in charge of Gold Coast Water Police and Coomera Police station.

He had recently transferred to Ipswich following a promotion.
