David Reynolds has won his first Supercars race in five years after holding off Championship leader Brodie Kostecki in a nail-biting Gold Coast 500 finale.
Just 0.18 of a second separated the pair after a frantic fight to the flag, which saw a safety car enacted on the Surfers Paradise circuit late in the race.
“It’s been a fantastic weekend for our boys – our little Penrite Racing team has done really well,” Reynolds said after the victory.
“Every session we’ve been fast. Matt’s (teammate Matthew Payne) been super fast.
“Third yesterday, two front rows and a win today, I can’t ask for anything more.”
Saturday’s race winner Cam Waters finished third to nab a Gold Coast double podium in front of a record crowd.
More than 201,971 fans flocked to watch this year’s event, making it the largest turnout at the Surfers Paradise circuit since 2012.
The impressive figure surpasses the previous record of 200,232 set last year.
“To have more than 200,000 fans once again attend the Gold Coast 500 confirms its status as Queensland’s biggest sporting event,” Supercars CEO Shane Howard said.
“Fans have embraced the three days on track and three nights of entertainment package, and it’s been amazing getting around the precinct to see all parts of the circuit lined with fans over the last three days.
“As well as our three days of entertainment within the track precinct, our aim was to ensure that fans from across Australia and beyond had an array of experiences leading up to the event.
“From the Transporter Parades through Main Beach to the Surfers Paradise Sunset Signing Session, and the Bathurst 1000 viewing at Burleigh earlier this month, the build-up has been incredible”.
The Supercars Championship now heads to the streets of Adelaide, where this year’s championship is set to be decided between Kostecki and van Gisbergen.
