Queensland Ballet is this week set to bring a touch of magic to the Gold Coast with their highly anticipated performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
After capturing the hearts of Brisbane viewers in 2016, Liam Scarlett’s whimsical rendition of Shakespeare’s timeless classic is back and ready to captivate audiences at the Home of the Arts (HOTA) from tomorrow, Friday 24 February.
HOTA interim CEO Mik Auckland said he was delighted to welcome back Queensland Ballet to the HOTA theatre.
“Anyone who lives on the Gold Coast knows we love Queensland Ballet and they know they call us their home away from home,” he told MyGC.
“It’s lovely to have them back in the theatre, they were last here on the outdoor stage with Rooster and Jack Lister’s B-Sides, a very contemporary work, and we are moving back into more of a classic lyrical piece with A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
“It’s a very modern interpretation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, it was only choreographed by Liam Scarlett in 2015.
“It’s a classic story- Shakespeare wrote it 400 or so years ago- and I like to think of it as the original rom-com; so it’s full of comedy, it’s full of mischief and intrigue, it’s unrequited love.”
Queensland Ballet’s Artistic Director Li Cunxin AO said the company’s regional touring program is a highlight of the year.
“As a Company, we are incredibly grateful to tour across Queensland annually and to have the opportunity to share world-class productions on the smaller stages across the state,” Mr Li said.
“There is a strong appreciation for our art form in the regions and we are always warmly received, especially on the Gold Coast.”
As one of the most eagerly awaited performances of the year, the Queensland Ballet’s regional tour promises to delight audiences with its whimsical storyline and masterful execution.
“Scarlett’s rendition of Shakespeare’s fantastical masterpiece is beautifully choreographed and visually stunning, interweaving the magical and mortal realms with sublime sets, costumes, and music,” Mr Li said.
