Police investigating a shocking fatal crash in Mudgeeraba are looking into whether the driver was ‘skylarking’ amid reports it may have been live-streamed on social media.

An 18-year-old man died after a Toyota Yaris hit a tree on Somerset Drive around 9.15pm on Saturday night.

A 17-year-old male passenger was taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.

A third male escaped injury.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the accident with Police confirming the manner of driving is their main focus.

“There is some suggestion that there may have been some, shall we just say, some skylarking in the vehicle in the lead up to this,” Acting Superintendent Bruce Kuhn told the ABC.

“We also believe that the manner of driving may have even been live streamed at the time through social media.

“So when we take all that into consideration, it’s such a sad situation. That tragedy can occur from foolish behaviour if that’s what’s occurred. That’s what our investigation is focused on at the moment.

Police are urging any witnesses or anyone with relevant CCTV or dashcam footage to contact them.
