A p-plater has allegedly been caught driving more than three times the legal limit after crashing his car on the Gold Coast tram tracks.
Police say the 22-year-old was driving north along Surfers Paradise Boulevard in his silver Mercedes around 1.30am on Wednesday when he careered onto the light rail tracks.
The vehicle then ploughed into a light pole at the Cypress Avenue station.
The man, from Nerang, was breath tested at the scene and allegedly returned a reading of 0.179, which is more than three times the legal limit.
He has since been charged with one count of driving on a tramway and driving under the influence of liquor.
He’ll front Southport Magistrates Court on February 14.
