LATEST @ 1.30 PM | Police have lifted the emergency declaration made in Southport this morning following the discovery of guns and grenades.
A man is alleged to have dropped off a duffel bag with three grenades and three semi-automatic rifles to a law business on Bay Street around 8.20am.
It sparked a major police operation, with officers making an emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act around 8.45am.
The building where the law business is located was evacuated, while residents in the exclusion zone of Bay Street between Davenport Street and Rawlins Street were told to remain indoors.
No threats were made, however, the bomb squad was called in to investigate the discovery.
“Following a thorough search of the area and seizure of the devices, the area was deemed safe with the PSPA revoked around 11.40am,” A Queensland Police spokesperson said.
“Police thank the community for their co-operation”.
It’s understood police know the identity of the man alleged to have sparked the lockdown, but are still working to track him down.
Investigations are continuing.
EARLIER @ 9.15 AM | Police have set up an exclusion zone in Southport this morning after grenades and firearms were surrendered at an office building.
Emergency services were called to Bay Street around 8.20am on Wednesday after the three grenades and three firearms were handed in.
Queensland Police have made it clear no threats have been made.
The occupants of the office building have been evacuated and an exclusion zone is now in place with boundaries encompassing Bay Street between Davenport Street and Rawlins Street.
Residents within the exclusion zone are urged to stay inside their properties.
Police are currently conducting emergency operations in the area and have asked members of the public to stay away.
