UPDATE @ 5.30am, August 14 | A woman has now been charged with murder following the horrific death of a 10-year-old girl on the Gold Coast.
The 46-year-old woman was taken into custody in Carrara around 10.25pm on Tuesday night, around four hours after emergency services found the little girl unresponsive at a unit in Emerald Lakes.
She will now appear before Southport Magistrates Court later on Tuesday charged with murder.
Police have confirmed the woman and child were known to each other.
It’s also been revealed the young girl attended Emmanuel College in Carrara, with the school confirming counselling teams will be on hand this morning to assist students and teachers.
“The Emmanuel College community is devastated by the tragic passing of one of our students at a home within Emerald Lakes last night,” the school said in a statement.
“Our prayers are with the family, friends, first responders and all affected by the loss of this beloved child in her home.
“Our priority is supporting our community at this difficult time.
“We have mobilised our counselling and pastoral care teams to provide comprehensive support to students, staff and parents as our community comes to terms with this distressing news.
“We ask for understanding and respect for the privacy of our families and students at this time”.
Police say Operation Whiskey Omega has been established and will continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.

EARLIER | Police have confirmed a homicide investigation is underway following the death of a young girl on the Gold Coast.
Emergency crews rushed to a home on Central Place in Carrara around 6pm on Tuesday, following reports a child had been found unresponsive.
Despite desperate efforts by paramedics, the 10-year-old girl could not be revived and was declared deceased at the scene.
A crime scene has been declared at the property, with investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death now underway.
