LATEST @ 3PM | Severe thunderstorms packing heavy rainfall and damaging winds have lashed parts of the Gold Coast this afternoon.
Currumbin Creek recorded almost 60 millimetres of rain in just 45 minutes to 2.15pm.
Despite a number of large storm cells still hovering over parts of the city, the Bureau of Meteorology has confirmed the storms have now eased.
“Severe thunderstorms in the warning area have temporarily eased,” BOM said.
“However, the redevelopment of severe thunderstorms remains likely.
“The situation is being closely monitored and further detailed warnings will be issued as necessary.”
The wet weather appears to be causing chaos on the roads, with the Pacific Motorway congested pretty much all the way from Ormeau to Burleigh Heads.
Northbound traffic is also at a standstill from Tweed Heads to Elanora, and again from Merrimac to Gaven.
The Gold Coast Highway isn’t much better, with delays all the way from Tugun to Miami.
EARLIER @ 2PM | A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for the Gold Coast this afternoon.
According to the Bureau of Meteorology, severe thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar near Tallebudgera, Mudgeeraba and Murwillumbah around 1.50pm.
A slow-moving storm cell is hovering over the hinterland and Coolangatta at the moment, with another cell lurking over Coomera on the northern Gold Coast.
The weather bureau warns damaging winds and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding is likely.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should:
* Never drive, walk or ride through flood waters. If it’s flooded, forget it.
* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
* Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.
* Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.
The next warning is due to be issued by 2:20 pm.
