Council is remaining tight-lipped about a potential new massive film studio on the Gold Coast, but admits any addition to the local film industry is welcome.
A United States consortium is reportedly eyeing off an 85-hectare block of land on the northern Gold Coast for a snazzy new film studio.
The large site along Stanmore Road in Yatala is owned by Council, with confidential negotiations now underway.
It’s understood if given the greenlight, the new studio would create around 5000 jobs and pump $1 billion into the economy each year.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Deputy Mayor Donna Gates said it would be a major coup for the city.
“The interest is jobs for the city, and the creation of additional film studios because the studios we do have are booked out for about 18 months in advance,” Ms Gates said.
“I think we are all mindful of Baz Luhrmann and Tom Hanks saying this is the best place in the world to make movies”.
The Premier also echoed that yesterday, revealing the filming of Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis movie on the Gold Coast helped the city cement itself as a “permanent Hollywood”.
Annastacia Palaszczuk told State Parliament the Gold Coast continues to be one of the most attractive places in the world to film.
“To think that that number one movie was made here in Queensland, every single person should be proud of that,” she said.
“Most importantly, the people who worked on the set, the young man who plays young Elvis actually goes to school on the Gold Coast and he has a very bright future ahead of him.”
