The man convicted of killing Gold Coast teenager Jack Beasley will appeal the length of his prison sentence today.
The killer, who was 15 at the time, was sentenced to a maximum 10 years in jail for the stabbing murder of Jack in Surfers Paradise in 2019.
However, because he pleaded guilty he will only have to spend seven years behind bars and will today attempt to shave another two years from his sentence.
It means that if successful, he will only have to spend five years in jail and will be a free man in just 18 months.
Jack’s parents Brett and Belinda Beasley have described the news as heartbreaking.
“He will get to spend his 21st birthday with his family and friends unlike we did,” Brett told Nine.
“It’s a real kick in the guts for us, it’s terrible… This man murdered our son and he’s winging about getting seven years in jail for it.
“I know everyone has the right to appeal, but as far as I’m concerned, if you murder someone you should lose your rights,” he said.
Belinda Beasley admitted they’re “tired” and just want the nightmare to be over.
“We just want to move on and to be able to put that part of our life behind us, because it really is traumatic for the family,” she said.
“I just think that there’s no justice for the victim, Jack was the victim, what justice does he get?
“And we get traumatised for the past three and a half years of being at courts and trials, it’s just not fair”.
