A driver has been incredibly lucky to escape serious injury after plunging down an embankment in the Gold Coast hinterland.

The vehicle lost control while travelling along Mystery Road in Guanaba around 5.20am on Tuesday.

The car crashed down an embankment before slamming into a tree, trapping the female driver behind the wheel.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Service crews had to use the jaws of life to free the woman, who was rescued around half an hour later.

She was then treated at the scene by Queensland Ambulance Paramedics for a head laceration before being taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.

Police are investigating.
