LATEST @ 4.45 PM | Dozens of people have been exposed to an unknown “gas or fume” sparking a major emergency response at a workplace in Southport this afternoon.
A total of 53 people were treated by paramedics following the suspected fumes leak at a company on Nind Street around 2.30pm.
At least 24 were found to be suffering from respiratory symptoms, with six people taken to hospital in stable conditions.
The cause of the fumes remains unknown, however a Queensland Fire and Emergency Service spokesperson told myGC a faulty air conditioner inside the building could be to blame.
Investigations are continuing.
Nind Street has been closed, with diversions via Rawland Street currently in place.
Police are urging motorists to avoid the area.
