More help is on the way for victims of the Gold Coast’s twin weather disasters with the federal government activating more financial assistance.
Eligible residents who have suffered significant loss as a result of the Christmas night storms and the floods that followed days later will be able to apply for a one-off payment of $1000 per adult and $400 per child.
The payment will be available for victims in almost 30 suburbs across the Gold Coast, Scenic Rim and Logan council areas.
The federal government has also activated the Disaster Recovery Allowance, which provides up to 13 weeks of federal income support to assist eligible employees or sole traders who experience a loss of income as a direct result of the disasters.
The allowance is available for eligible people who live or work in the Gold Coast, City of Logan and Scenic Rim Region Local Government Areas.
Applications for both payments open at 2pm on Monday (Jan 8) via the Services Australia website.
“We understand that often insurance claims can take some time to process, so these $1000 payments will help to get Queenslanders back on their feet faster,” Emergency Management Minister Murray Watt said,
“Other assistance is already available through the State and Commonwealth Governments to help with recovery costs, including $5000 grants for electricity and sewerage reconnection, up to $50,000 for uninsured homeowners to rebuild or repair damaged homes, and concessional small business loans of up to $250,000.”
