Two men accused of being high on drugs behind the wheel have been hit with thousands of dollars worth of fines following investigations into two separate crashes on the Gold Coast.
The crashes happened on Sunday and both involved a Nissan Dualis.
In the first crash, police allege the vehicle smashed into another car on the M1 at Gaven around midday and continued driving even with major damage to the bonnet.
This caused the bonnet to flip up, damage the vehicle windscreen and detach from the vehicle.
Officers tracked the vehicle down a short time later on Napper Road in Arundel.
The 25-year-old male driver allegedly returned a positive roadside drug test and was issued a 24-hour driver’s licence suspension.
The Tanah Merah man was also slapped with fines totalling over $1700.
The infringements include failing to give way when entering traffic from side of road ($464) ; failing to drive within marked lane on multi-lane road ($123); driving a defective vehicle ($309); failing to remove from road something which has fallen from driver’s vehicle and is likely to injure, obstruct or damage (bonnet) ($258); injurious matter on road ($619).
Police investigations remained ongoing and a ‘police aware’ sticker was fixed onto the defective vehicle’s windscreen.
Around 9pm that night, the same Nissan Dualis was allegedly spotted driving dangerously on Smith Street in Molendinar before crashing and rolling into bushes.
Police allege the driver of this crash, a 25-year-old Nerang man, was a passenger of the earlier crash on the M1.
He was the only occupant inside the car and was transported to hospital in a stable condition.
He allegedly returned a positive roadside drug test and was issued with two Traffic Infringement Notices.
These include drive defective vehicle ($361) and drive without clear view (police aware sticker obstructing view) ($309).
He was also issued a Notice to Appear for failing to provide specimen of blood and is expected to appear before the Southport Magistrates Court on October 11.
Police have released body-cam vision from both incidents which can be viewed below.
