Australian boxing superstar Tim Tszyu has retained his WBO super-welterweight crown after defeating Brian Mendoza in a tense and brutal encounter on the Gold Coast.
A sell-out crowd packed the Gold Coast Convention Centre on Sunday to witness the 28-year-old claim a unanimous decision victory over his American opponent.
The 12-round win extends Tszyu’s undefeated streak to an impressive 24-0.
Following the fight, Mayor Tom Tate took to social media to ramp up his call for a boutique stadium on the Gold Coast in a bid to bring more fights and other events to the glitter strip.
“The city congratulates Tim Tszyu and the Rose Brothers for an incredible result for Team Tszyu and the Gold Coast,” Mayor Tate said.
“I’ve consistently said this: the great thing about the Gold Coast is that we don’t have to brag about our appeal as a major sports destination – we let the results do the talking.
“The case for a boutique stadium in our city is now so compelling.
“I look forward to progressing talks on that project in 2024… Stay tuned”.
