A man remains on the run following a vicious attack in Sanctuary Cove that’s left another man fighting for life.
39-year-old Michael Hayes was punched in the head by a man on Saturday night outside Destino Wine and Cocktail Bar.
Police say he was dining with friends and had left the venue at around 9.20pm before being spotted speaking to an unknown man.
“A short time later that male person has then delivered one blow to the head of Mr Hayes, causing him to collapse to the ground,” Detective Inspector Chris Ahearn.
“The male person has then immediately fled the scene westbound on Masthead Way, which leads out of the Sanctuary Cove Village.”
The suspect is described as Caucasian, between 20-30 years old with short, dark hair.
He was wearing what police believe to be a dark tracksuit, a long-sleeved dark shirt, and a man bag or satchel over his shoulder.
Police say they’re not sure if the two men were known to each other.
Mr Hayes remains in the ICU at the Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition.
Police are appealing for anyone with information, or witnesses, to come forward.
“Over the weekend we had the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show in that vicinity. We know there was a number of people in that area, including, a number of interstate visitors who may have returned to their homes in the state,”
“We’d like to make an appeal to anyone who is in the vicinity of Destinos Restaurant on Saturday, May 27, between, 9pm and 9.30pm, for anyone who saw anything suspicious or indeed this incident or who took video, on their phone or still images in that area to please contact police. Also anyone who might have dash cam footage in the vicinity of Hope Island between 9pm and 10pm please do come forward and contact police.”
“And if you have direct knowledge of this matter we also urge you to contact police. You can do so through Police Link or anonymously through Crime Stoppers.”
