LATEST @ 12.00 PM | A man is lucky to be alive following a terrifying drive-by shooting in the heart of Surfers Paradise early this morning.
The man was walking along Ferny Avenue with two other men when he was allegedly shot around 4.30am.
Police say the shot was fired from a passing vehicle, which has since been identified as stolen.
It was found burnt out in Brisbane shortly after the shooting this morning.
The victim, a 20-year-old man from Brisbane, was treated at the scene by paramedics for a wound to his chest.
He was taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious condition, but is now stable.
The incident has left detectives baffled, with police admitting it does appear to be a random attack.
“At this point in time there is no motive that we are aware of,” Acting Superintendent Scott Knowles said.
“It doesn’t appear that the victim or his friends knew anybody that was causing any problems, or had any issues with anybody.
“There doesn’t appear to be any rhyme or reason as to why this shot was fired”.
Acting Supt Knowles said a major investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting is now underway.
“The vehicle was stolen several days earlier from the north side of Brisbane, this incident’s occurred on the Gold Coast, and this vehicle has now been located up in the Pallara area,” he said.
“So our investigators are working to determine what the connection is between all the areas, the vehicle, and everyone that may have been involved”.
Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident, or has relevant CCTV or dash-cam footage, to contact them.
