A man and woman are in custody after crashing an allegedly stolen car and bringing down a power pole in Broadbeach.

Police under lights and sirens were responding to another traffic crash on the Gold Coast Highway just after 4am on Monday.

The occupants of a Mazda CX-5 are understood to have attempted to evade the officers, thinking they were being pursued.

The Mazda then crashed into a light pole on the highway near Rosewood Avenue, sending the pole crashing to the ground, blocking the southbound lanes.

The male driver and female passenger fled the scene before being tracked down by the dog squad and arrested in Rosewood Avenue a short time later.

The 25-year-old man was taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital with minor injuries after the airbag deployed.

He and a 24-year-old Booval woman are now back at the watchhouse being questioned with charges expected to be laid today.
