A man has died in a massive house fire on the northern Gold Coast, with a major police investigation now underway.
Police said officers were initially called to a domestic-violence related incident at the Upper Coomera property around 10.20am on Saturday.
Upon arrival at the Stanfield Drive home, police quickly determined the incident was mental health related.
“Officers have knocked on the door and called out for the occupant,” Senior Sergeant Brett MacGibbon said.
“There was no response from inside the house and then within a few seconds of them arriving they’ve been met with a large explosion”.
An emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act was declared at 11am, with nearby residents self-evacuated and roads in the suburb closed until the fire was brought under control.
Once the blaze was extinguished, investigators located the body of a 52-year-old man inside.
A crime scene was declared, with investigations into the cause now underway.
Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
