Police have been forced to rescue a sausage dog that was left in a sweltering hot car in Coolangatta for at least an hour.
‘Duppy’ the Miniature Daschund was spotted inside a Volkswagen Jetta by several concerned members of the public who raised the alarm around 2.30pm on Sunday.
Officers rushed to the scene and found the vehicle parked in the sun with temperatures outside at the time exceeding 27-degrees with high humidity.
Duppy was located in the back seat of the car with no water, with police immediately launching into action, managing to reach through a small gap in the window to get Duppy out.
“An uncapped syringe was also observed in the vehicle,” Queensland Police said.
While police were attending to Duppy, the alleged driver of the vehicle returned and was taken into custody.
The 38-year-old Tweed Heads man, who was looking after Duppy for his owner, was charged with fail to take reasonable care and precautions in respect of syringe or needle.
He is expected to appear at Coolangatta Magistrates Court on 20 January, 2025.
Police said Duppy was cared for by Coolangatta police before being returned safely to his owner.
