A man has been charged after allegedly blowing over four times the legal limit after crashing his car into a river at Broadbeach Waters.
Emergency crews were called to Rudd Street on Saturday night after shocked motorists saw a car plough into the water.
A number of Good Samaritans ran to the driver’s aid, diving into the water to help him out of the submerged vehicle.
Police said that upon arrival, the vehicle was almost fully submerged, with the motorist extremely lucky to have escaped with the help of other members of the community.
The 24-year-old from Surfers Paradise was breath tested at the scene after officers noticed he appeared to be heavily intoxicated.
He allegedly returned a positive result and was taken back to the local police station, where he allegedly provided a blood alcohol reading of .215, over four times the limit.
The man has been issued a notice to appear in court later this month.
