Work has officially begun on stage 3 of the Gold Coast light rail.

The $1.2 billion extension will take the line a further 6.7 kilometres from Broadbeach to Burleigh Heads.

Motorists are being urged to drive with patience, with major construction set to affect the Gold Coast Highway.

The project will add 8 new stations and 5 new trams, while the existing Southport depot will also be upgraded.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says the major construction will support the addition of hundreds of local jobs.

“This is an exciting milestone for this project which will support around 760 good local jobs,” the Premier says.

“And if any of the previous stages are to go by, 90 per cent of workers came from the Gold Coast and surrounding regions.”

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey says it’s a fantastic investment,

“Never again will you need to fight for a carpark on Burleigh Hill when you and your surfboard can be dropped off at the surf club,” Minister Bailey says.

“This next phase of works will see construction of the road and rail begin down the Gold Coast Highway, as well as station begin to take shape,”

“Traffic conditions on the Gold Coast Highway will look a little different, so I appreciate the patience of drivers as we deliver this important project.”

Stage 3 is set to be completed in 2025.
