Local businesses and residents in parts of Burleigh Heads are being warned as the next wave of light rail construction kicks off.
Demolition works begin next week along a 900-metre stretch of the Lower Gold Coast Highway in order to build a retaining wall.
Traffic changes start tomorrow, and will include the roadway being reduced to just one lane.
Piling is scheduled to commence in October, with more than 400 piles to be installed along the Lower Gold Coast Highway to create the foundations for the new retaining wall.
The works are part of the $1.2 billion Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3 project that’ll see the tram extended 6.7km from Broadbeach South to Burleigh Heads.
The construction company in charge, GoldLinq, is apologising for the inconvenience to the community that these works will create but say it’s a “critical” part of the project.
CEO Phil Mumford says they’re working closely with local residents and businesses.
“Obviously while we’re doing these works there will be impacts to the residents and businesses along here,” Mr Mumford says.
“People can get information from us, we do have a large team working one-on-one with not only the residents but also the businesses.”
The construction will only be completed during the day, from 6.30am until 6.30pm Monday to Friday in order to minimise the noise impacts on residents.
“The community doesn’t want us to do night-time work because of the noise impacts, but if we do those works in the day time it impacts upon the car traffic,” Mr Mumford says.
“So it’s about getting that balance right.”
Some work might be required on Saturdays, or at night but GoldLinq says advanced warning will be provided to impacted stakeholders in that case.
