The “Goldies” are no more, with confirmation the Gold Coast has lost the hosting rights for Australian Television’s much-loved Logie Awards.
The annual event, which has been held on the Gold Coast since 2018, will be held in Sydney this year.
It’s a major blow to the city’s tourism industry, with the event injecting millions into the local economy as stars and celebrities flocked to the glitter strip.
However, Major Events Gold Coast is remaining optimistic about the city’s ability to poach big events in the future.
“The Gold Coast has been the home of Australian Television’s night of nights since 2018 and we have enjoyed hosting the TV WEEK Logie Awards here along with the country’s brightest screen stars,” Major Events Gold Coast CEO Jan McCormick.
“Our city has a long history of supporting the film and television industry and it continues to be the destination of choice for many national and international productions.
“We’re looking forward to seeing that grow along with our portfolio of arts and cultural events that showcase our beautiful destination to new audiences.”
It’s the first time the Logies will be returning to Sydney after nearly 40 years interstate, with Melbourne hosting the event for decades before it was snatched by Queensland.
“The time was right to find a new home for the Logies and bringing them back to Sydney after more than 30 years made perfect sense,” Seven boss James Warburton told The Daily Telegraph.
“Australia’s TV networks and many of its major production companies are based in Sydney and the city provides a backdrop for some of the country’s most popular TV shows.”
The highly speculated move comes after the Logies’ partnership deal with the Queensland Government ended in 2022.
