Volunteer surf lifesavers were kept busy over the weekend with more than 22,300 people enjoying beaches across the Gold Coast.
NSW school holidays kicked off on Friday, joining Queensland kids who are now one week down.
It meant beaches were packed, despite the weather not being the most ideal beach weather.
But lifesavers say they’re “impressed” with everyone’s beach behavior with nobody needing to be rescued at all on Saturday or Sunday on the Gold Coast.
Across the state, six people needed to be saved from the surf – but that’s down from a whopping 61 the weekend before.
Peta Lawlor, SLSQ’s General Manager for Lifesaving and Education, says the decrease in rescue numbers was reflective of the public doing the right thing.
“This weekend, our lifesavers performed only six rescues across the state, a number we hope continues to decrease as the general public continues to swim between the flags,” Ms Lawlor says.
“With the long weekend and warmer weather predicted for the last weekend of school holidays, we are urging people to remain vigilant, swim only between the red and yellow flags and to be sure to supervise your children,
