The Gold Coast Titans have recorded arguably one of their biggest and most inspirational Queensland derby victories in history.
Despite being savaged by injuries across the board, the men in blue stepped up to claim a shock 36-34 point win over ‘big brother’ the Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
With more than a handful of their star players sitting on the sideline watching on, Des Hasler’s men fought hard right until the end to produce what many are claiming to be the upset of the season in front of a sold-out crowd.
Gold Coast youngster Keano Kini put on a show in the number one jersey, coming up with 251 metres off 26 runs to go with his two try assists.
Winger Tony Francis also had an NRL debut to remember, scoring a try in the 13th minute, however, that was soured when the 21-year-old was forced from the field shortly after with a shoulder injury.
Gun forward David Fifita also had a blinder, with 20 runs for 235 metres and 6 tackle breaks before he left the field for a HIA late in the match for which he later passed.
The huge M1 derby victory was the club’s second win of the year and is likely to give the side a major confidence boost heading into the remainder of the season.
The Titans are among six clubs who have been handed the bye this week before taking on the Rabbitohs at Cbus Super Stadium in Round 14.
