Most of the Queensland coast is sweltering through heatwave conditions, as the south east also braces for the possibility of more thunderstorms.

A low-intensity heatwave is sweeping the state and is expected to do so for the next few days, prompting authorities to issue a warning.

At 6.30am on Thursday, the “feels like” temperature at the Gold Coast Seaway was already sitting at 27C thanks to high humidity.

The Gold Coast is headed for a top of 31 degrees today, with the mercury set to soar to 34 in some parts of the city tomorrow and Saturday.

Thunderstorms are also on the cards every day.

We won’t be able to escape the hot and muggy conditions at night either, with minimum temperatures as high as 25 degrees.

Thankfully, the heatwave conditions are expected to gradually ease after the weekend.

Tony Hucker from Queensland Ambulance says now is the time we should be checking on the most vulnerable members of our community.

“If there are elderly people close by to where you live, go and knock on their door and make sure they’re okay,” he said.

“People who have chronic illnesses are also at a higher risk of getting sick from heat-related illness, as are young babies, so we just need to keep an extra eye out for them”.
