Gold Coasters are being warned not to be alarmed if they see or smell a bit of smoke around today, with a hazard reduction burn planned for the hinterland.

With weather permitting, the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service will conduct a planned burn in the Beacon Road and Panorama Sections of Tamborine National Park from 25 – 27 February.

According to QPWS, it’s part of the annual hazard reduction/conservation management program for parks and forests.

“The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service conducts planned burns around the State to reduce the risk and intensity of bushfires and support a healthy environment,” Queensland Parks said.

“These burns aim to mitigate the risk and intensity of bushfires and their potential impacts on communities, infrastructure, parks, and forests.

“They are also vital in promoting ecological health, biodiversity, and the conservation of species and habitats”.

As a result of the planned burn, smoke may be seen in nearby areas.

“If visiting Tamborine National Park observe all signs, barriers, and directions from QPWS Rangers and never enter closed areas,” a spokesperson for QPWS said.

“Avoid driving through smoke where possible and be aware of firefighters working in the area”.

If smoke affects you:

  • Stay indoors and close windows and doors; and
  • Keep respiratory medication close by.
