Gold Coasters might have to forego the beach for a while, with dreary weather expected right through to next week.

It is unusual weather for this time of year, with September being one of the Gold Coast’s drier months usually.

Livio Regano from the Bureau of Meteorology says the rain won’t be too heavy, but will be consistently hanging around.

“It’s more that it’ll just be inclement. Not particularly nice weather, dodgy every day,” Mr Regano says.

“There are a couple of peaks in activity. The first one will be tomorrow [Tuesday] when we’re expecting it will be raining all day. Not heavy, just a few millimetres but just a dreary old sort of day.”

There may be a thunderstorm on Wednesday, and Thursday will be cloudy and patchy rain all day.

Heading into the end of this week, we can expect to see up to 40mm of rain across Friday, Saturday and Sunday with a wet weekend ahead.

“Most likely Friday night into Saturday is when we could expect up to typically about 25 mm, which is not an enormous amount of rain but keeping in mind that in September our average rainfall is only about 50 or 60 millimetres,”

“It’s supposed to be the driest time of year, so getting that kind of rain is very unseasonal,

“This is going to be an unusual Winter and Spring.”

The negative Indian Ocean Dipole, as well as La Nina coming back is to blame, with BOM saying we’ve simply got “overheated oceans everywhere”.
