The Gold Coast’s end-of-year event schedule has been expanded, with even more Christmas Carols and New Year’s Eve celebrations planned for the city.

Council today endorsed the addition of extra events on the Southern and Northern Gold Coast, while the Mayor’s annual Christmas Carols will be held at a bigger venue.

Coomera and Coolangatta will each host Christmas Carols, as well as massive New Year’s Eve fireworks displays.

While the Mayor’s event will be back at the Broadwater Parklands this year, to allow more people to attend the much-loved community affair.

Mayor Tom Tate says it’s time to ramp up the fun again following a tough couple of years.

“After COVID, we want to celebrate and nothing better than New Year’s Eve and Christmas,” Mayor Tate says.

“The rolling lockdowns of the past two years have impacted the social connection our city is famous for so it’s time to come together and celebrate the joys of the festive season.”

The total cost to host these additional carols and NYE events will be around $100,000 each – a cost Mayor Tate says is well worth it.

“The return on investment, it’s multiple times that. It goes with city’s reputation and it’s wonderful – I mean ask the kids if it’s worth it!”

The Mayor’s Christmas Carols will also be trialling the use of drones instead of fireworks – with hopes children may be able to see Santa and his reindeer fly across the night sky.

Mayor Tate confirmed this years event will still have fireworks too.

All of the events will remain free for locals to enjoy, with dates to be published in the coming weeks.
