The Gold Coast community is being called on to donate items that could make a difference in the lives of our most vulnerable residents who are doing it tough.
A donation drive has been launched today ahead of the city’s 13th annual Homeless Connect event at Metricon Stadium on August 3.
We’re being encouraged to go through our cupboards, get out old blankets or any clothing we no longer wear and drop them into one of the 10 dedicated collection points across the coast.
Non-perishable food and toiletries are also particularly needed.
Deputy Mayor Donna Gates says it’s been a tough year for many locals.
“Our city, like many, has social challenges. It’s an amazing place to live, but something I think that many of us take for granted,” Cr Gates says.
“This year more than any other year, there are terrible issues that have arisen with rent increasing as it has so astronomically, the weather has been cold, and cost of living pressures are just enormous.”
The Homeless Connect event will greatly benefit residents experiencing homelessness and those at risk of homelessness.
Around 1000 of the city’s most vulnerable people, including children, young people, families and older community members, are expected to attend.
Gold Coast Homelessness Network Chairperson Maria Leebeek said that the demand for support is extremely high in the region, especially due to the cost of housing.
“These pressures have placed great burdens on our community where people are struggling to pay rent and keep food on the table,” Ms Leebeek says.
“Unlike previous years we have seen greater numbers of people who are working but unable to retain or obtain housing,
“This has meant that more people are couch surfing with families and friends and unfortunately an increase in the numbers of people who are sleeping in cars or rough sleeping.”
Dedicated donation points are located at Burleigh Heads Library, City of Gold Coast Nerang Customer Service Centre, Elanora Library, GC SUNS offices at Metricon Stadium, Helensvale Library, Labrador Community Hub, Robina Community Centre, Runaway Bay Community Centre, Southport Library and Upper Coomera Community Centre.
