Gold Coasters have woken to an early morning light show, with thunderstorms bearing down on parts of the city.
The Summer storms come after residents sweltered through a scorching hot night as a low intensity heatwave continues to grip the region.
It still felt like 32 degrees at the Gold Coast Seaway at 9pm, with the mercury only getting down to a low of 23C at 4am this morning.
The warm weather put demand for power across the South East almost at an all-time high as air-conditioners were worked overtime.
As a result, thousands of homes across the Gold Coast were plunged into darkness as a power outage hit multiple suburbs, with the majority in Ormeau.
We’re not expected to receive any reprieve from the heatwave conditions for at least another week, with temps of around 30C forecast for the next 7 days.
The Bureau of Meteorology has tipped the Gold Coast’s temperature to reach tops of 31C today, before soaring to 35C on Friday.
However, the humidity will make it feel even warmer, with authorities urging us to keep a close eye on our most vulnerable members of the community including the elderly and pets.
