The Gold Coast has just shivered through its coldest days in more than 30 years with the maximum temp falling seven degrees below the average for this time of year.
The mercury at the Gold Coast Seaway didn’t get above 14.2 degrees on Monday, the coldest day of the year so far.
It’s also the lowest maximum temp since records at the Seaway began in 1992, beating the previous record of 14.5 degrees set in June 2011.
However, the city did record a maximum temp of just 13 degrees at the old Southport Ridgeway Ave weather station back in August 1990.
Today’s maximum is well below the average for July of 21.3 degrees.
It also felt a whole lot colder than the 14 degrees with the apparent temp hovering around 9 or 10 degrees for most of the day.
Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Livio Rogano says an unseasonable cloud cover is to blame.
“It’s very unusual to have a big stack of cloud like this in the middle of winter, which is supposed to be the dry season covering the whole state to the extent that it rains in most eastern districts and is cold at the same time,” Mr Rogano said.
Temperatures will dip down to 9 degrees on Tuesday morning in most parts of the Gold Coast before a showery top of 19 degrees however, it’s likely to feel colder than that again.
