Gold Coasters are being told not to be alarmed if they see or smell a bit of smoke around today.
A planned hazard reduction burn is getting underway around parts of Stradbroke Island Conservation Park and Coomera Island in the city’s north.
The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service has confirmed the burns will begin today and run through to Friday, weather permitting.
As a result, smoke may be seen near Tipplers, Couran Cove and Currigee precincts, Coomera Island and Woogoompah Island.
“These burns aim to mitigate the risk and intensity of bushfires and their potential impacts on communities, infrastructure, parks, and forests,” QPWS said.
“They are also vital in promoting ecological health, biodiversity, and the conservation of species and habitats”.
Anyone visiting South Stradbroke Island, Woogoombah Island or Coomera Island, is being urged to observe all signs, barriers, and directions.
“Avoid driving through smoke where possible and be aware of firefighters working in the area,” QPWS said.
