It’s been an adventurous weekend for residents on one Gold Coast street after they helped detain two teenagers allegedly trying to steal cars.

It all unfolded on Kurrawa Avenue in Mermaid Waters around 1.15am on Sunday.

Superintendent Geoff Sheldon told the ABC that members of the public “woke to the sound of a disturbance on the street” and “caught two teens trying to break into cars”.

The locals immediately sprung into action and detained the teens until police arrived on scene.

Superintendent Sheldon said the pair suffered minor injuries as a result of the scuffle with residents.

“They were released from hospital and handed back to police,” Spt Sheldon said.

The duo will now be dealt with under the Youth Justice Act.

It comes following a spate of car break-ins in the suburb, forcing residents to band together to beef up security.

Many locals have installed extra cameras and locks, and have even set up their own neighbourhood watch, in a bid to try and stamp out the alarming rise in youth crime in the area.
