A new report has warned the Gold Coast is now simply unaffordable for people on low incomes with the rental crisis worsening.

The 2024 Anglicare Australia Rental Affordability Snapshot found that housing affordability has not improved since the start of COVID, with the average rent across Australia now $200 a week higher than it was before the pandemic.

Anglicare analysed more than 45,o00 rental properties that were listed nationwide in March.

It found just 289 properties or 0.6 per cent were deemed affordable for a person earning a full-time minimum wage.

A property is classed as affordable if a person is spending less than 30 per cent of their income on rent.

Nationwide, just 0.2 per cent of rentals were deemed affordable for a person on the Age Pension while three properties in the entire country were deemed affordable for those on JobSeeker.

For those on Youth Allowance, there was nothing.

The situation is even worse on the Gold Coast where there was not a single affordable property for those on any type of income support.

For those on the minimum wage, there were just four properties deemed affordable.

Of the 1450 properties listed on the Gold Coast in March, the average rent was $850 a week, while the lowest was $275.
