A Gold Coast man has died and a woman is fighting for her life in hospital after their car collided with a four-wheel-drive near Maryborough.

The horror crash happened at Oakhurst just before 3.30pm on Thursday.

“Initial investigations indicate at approximately 3.25pm at the intersection of Mungar Road and Old Mill Road, a crash has occurred between a Toyota Corolla and Toyota Landcruiser,” Queensland Police said.

The driver of the Corolla, a 27-year-old man from Pimpama, suffered critical injuries and died at the scene.

His passenger, a 27-year-old Maryborough woman, was taken to Hervey Bay Hospital, where she remains in a critical condition.

The driver and passenger of the Landcruiser, a 68-year-old Tasmanian man and 64-year-old Tasmanian woman, were hospitalised in stable conditions.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
