LATEST @ 5.30PM |The threat of storms on the Gold Coast has temporarily eased for now, but the bureau is warning more storms could be on the way tonight.

Severe thunderstorms that are heading towards the southeast region may bring large hailstones and damaging winds.

The region is being told to prepare for the worst-case scenario, by moving cars undercover or away from trees, secure loose outdoor items and beware of fallen trees and powerlines.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services also advises that people should:

  • Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
  • Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.
  • For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.

EARLIER @ 4.45PM | We’re being urged to prepare for a severe thunderstorm heading towards southeast Queensland, including the Gold Coast.

A warning has been issued by The Bureau of Meteorology, with large hailstones and damaging winds “likely” to hit.

The Bureau says it’s thanks to a large thunderstorm continuing to move east.

“At 4:10 pm, severe thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar near Archerfield, Lake Somerset and Sunnybank Hills,” BOM says.

“These thunderstorms are moving towards the east.”

Those affected have been advised to move cars undercover or away from trees, secure loose outdoor items and beware of fallen trees and powerlines.

People in parts of Ipswich, Logan, Somerset, Redland City, Brisbane City and Moreton Bay Council Areas are also expected to be impacted.
