UPDATE | A Gold Coast councillor has had his murder charge heard in court for the very first time.

Ryan Bayldon-Lumsden was charged by police late on Wednesday night after his mother’s 58-year-old partner was found dead at the family home in Arundel earlier that day.

The Division 7 councillor did not appear when the case was briefly mentioned in Southport Magistrates Court early on Thursday.

Outside of court, his lawyer confirmed he would enter a plea of not guilty and they would be making a bail application in the Supreme Court in the next fortnight.

The matter will return to Southport Court on September 8.

EARLIER | Gold Coast Councillor Ryan Bayldon-Lumsden has been charged with murder following the death of his mother’s partner.

The Division 7 councillor was charged by police late on Wednesday night after a 58-year-old man was found dead at the family home in Arundel.

Emergency services were called to the Chiffley Place residence around 3pm following reports of a disturbance.

When they arrived, they found the man unconscious inside the home and commenced CPR, but he died at the scene.

Mr Bayldon-Lumsden was seen being taken from the home in a blue forensic suit by police for questioning before it was confirmed he had been charged.

The 30-year-old will appear before Southport Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Mr Bayldon-Lumsden, a former schoolteacher, made history in 2020 when he became the youngest councillor to be elected in the city’s history at the age of just 27.

Gold Coast City Council has ­refused to comment, directing all questions to Queensland Police.
