Council has confirmed it is cracking down on reckless dogs and their owners in a desperate bid to prevent any further attacks occurring across the city.
It comes in the wake of a horror attack on the Gold Coast this week, which saw a beloved pet dog mauled to death.
A woman was walking her pooch in a stroller at Labrador on Monday, when three off-leash dogs allegedly set upon the animal.
The woman suffered abrasions to her arms and legs while unsuccessfully trying to save her pet, who tragically passed away.
The animals involved have since been seized by council officers.
Acting Gold Coast Mayor Donna Gates said the city was now looking at increasing fines by a further $360 in a bid to deter owners from letting their pets roam free.
“No one wants to see fines increased but in this case, we are looking at hefty increases in fines for owners of dogs roaming off-leash,” Deputy Mayor Gates said.
“The fine is currently around $140 and will rise to more than $500 if approved at council.”
Ms Gates said “one attack is one too many”, highlighting the ample off-leash dog parks and beaches across the city.
“There is no excuse for a dog wandering without being controlled by its owner”.
